Hackers target Sony
Sony revealed Wednesday it had detected a large number of unauthorized sign-in attempts on its PlayStation Network, Sony Entertainment Network and Sony Online Entertainment Services. The Japanese technology giant said ''less than one-tenth'' of users was affected. But it was forced to lock 93,000 accounts after hackers managed to use valid IDs and passwords to sign in. Only a small fraction of those accounts showed additional activity prior to being locked. The company said credit card numbers associated with the accounts are not at risk. The attempts, between Oct. 7-10, appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or sources, Sony said.In April, Sony experienced a massive cyber attack on its PlayStation Network that forced it to shut the service down temporarily.Sony also Wednesday announced a global recall of 1.6 million flat-screen Bravia TVs sold since 2007 because of defective parts that could cause them to overheat or catch fire. There have been 11 incidents reported with the TVs since 2008, all in Japan and none fatal. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
