Paradise (Paradeisos)
A Strada Films discharge of a Pan Entertainment production, in colaboration with Greek Film Center, Ert Hellenic Broadcasting Corp., Guanaco, Homemade Films production. (Worldwide sales: Pan Entertainment, Athens.) Created by Maria Drandaki. Executive producer, Constantinos Moriatis. Directed, compiled by Panagiotis Fafoutis. With: Natassa Zaga, Mihalis Fotopoulos, Olia Lazaridou, Erricos Litsis, Christos Loulis, Constantinos Avarikiotis, Maria Skoula, Andreas Konstantinou, Lila Baklesi, Vaggelis Alexandris, Thanassis Vlavianos, Liza Neohoriti.Romance and confetti are up in "Paradise," the 2nd feature from Greek scribe-helmer Panagiotis Fafoutis ("The Heir"). Set from the madness from the circus in Patras (an event to rival the greater famous ones in Venice and Rio), pic traces the interconnected tales of two couples and 2 one-on the sides obsessions. Colorful floats and costumes and moving music really are a constant, even while the very first hour's solid crosscutting gives way to some more muddled and protracted other half that rapidly reduces the pic's emotional resonance. Local movie theaters, mainstream-oriented fests and satcasters would be the likeliest takers. The 4 tales are attached to a Paradise-designed circus float within the Patras parade, which happens other family members . before Eastern Orthodox given. Pic is placed throughout the brilliant couple of times of formulations and parties that precede the parade, along with the eye-catching spectacle itself ("Production value!" because the budding filmmaker protag of "Super 8" would say). London-based Marianna (Natassa Zaga) has came back to surprise her b.f., the party-loving DJ from the float, Mihalis (Mihalis Fotopoulos). Have secrets: Uber-busy Mihalis has not quite quit using drugs, while Marianna, who purchased a one-way ticket, rapidly knows that returning permanently surprise was possibly not such a good idea. Eugenia (Maria Skoula), who helps by helping cover their the Paradise costumes, has began an affair using the handsome but slightly more youthful float organizer, Antonis (Andreas Konstantinou). She's afraid to inform her edgy teen daughter (Lila Baklesi), who -- within the pic's most contrived developments -- has got the hots for Antonis, too. A gay prepare (Constantinos Avarikiotis) is privately deeply in love with his handsome straight boss, Socrates (Christos Loulis), as the middle-aged float driver, Ilias (Erricos Litsis), still pines for his ex-wife (Olia Lazaridou), a singer who's scheduled to do at various parties. Scribe-helmer Fafoutis (whose name is from time to time transliterated as Panayotis) handsomely creates the 4 tales and, along with editor Panos Voutsaras, agilely cuts included in this because they build momentum. The big cast of figures as well as their quandaries are rapidly and strongly drew. But around an hour in, it might be obvious the loosely connected yarns aren't all going in the same speed as well as building toward one large crescendo. The story lines of Eugenia and Socrates are extremely determined by their large discloses and peter out soon after. And also the impact from the tragedies of Ilias and Mihalis might have been increased if Fafoutis had attracted clearer parallels between your youthful guy not able to understand what she has and also the old guy recognizing past too far what he once had. Acting is solid overall, along with other tech credits are strong. D.p. Yorgos Papandrikopoulos' lighting of inside is particularly significant, though a few of the outside crowd moments around the (overcast) day's the parade were clearly shot with inferior equipment. Ioanna Tsami's costume designs are fantastic in addition to a supply of unpredicted humor, such as with a go in which a nurse needs to often a partygoer outfitted because the same.Camera (color), Yorgos Papandrikopoulos editor, Panos Voutsaras music, George Pallikaris production designer, Pinelopi Valti costume designer, Ioanna Tsami seem (Dolby Digital), Dimitris Kanellopoulos Aris Louziotis, Panos Voutsaras. An Oscar nomination might be awarded to Steve McQueen for the first time since 1966 ... only now he's British and black. Woody Allen wrote and directed a movie that made over $133 million worldwide ... yes, in this century. Francis Ford Coppola, Werner Herzog, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Wim Wenders -- all of whom are in their sixties or seventies -- directed 3D films, while Michel Hazanavicius, a 44-year-old Frenchman, wrote and directed a black-and-white silent film. Glenn Close may finally win an Oscar for dressing up as a man, and Leonardo DiCaprio may finally win an Oscar for dressing up as a woman. Albert Brooks may score his first Oscar nom in 24 years... for playing a Jewish mobster ... in a drama. Jonah Hill may score an Oscar nod ... period. Clint Eastwood, the 81-year-old who is best known for his work on-screen as a gun-toting tough guy and off-screen as a conservative mayor of Carmel, California, just directed his latest film using a script by -- and working in close collaboration with -- Dustin Lance Black, a 37-year-old gay screenwriter. Angelina Jolie has directed a movie, while Werner Herzog is now acting in one. The famously reclusive Terrence Malick has not only been seen in public, but has even had off-the-record conversations with journalists. Carey Mulligan gets nude in a movie ... while Kate Winslet does not. Woody Harrelson, one of the most notorious potheads and anti-authority figures of his time, may score his first best actor Oscar nod in 15 years ... for playing a cop. Michelle Yeoh, who is Asia's most famous female action star and a former Bond girl, may score her first Oscar nod for playing Aung San Suu Kyi, Asia's most famously demure and soft-spoken leader. Documentary filmmaker Steve James was screwed by the Academy's documentary branch ... again. The Academy, which is supposedly so liberal, has fallen head-over-heels for a film about Margaret Thatcher, but not for a film about George Harrison. A Harry Potter film has a shot -- a long shot, but a shot -- at scoring a best picture Oscar nod. Jessica Chastain has given a half-dozen memorable supporting performances this year -- any one of which is arguably Oscar-worthy -- but consequently may wind up without a nomination for even one of them. The Academy is allowing studios to ply journalists with food, alcohol, and parties before nominations are announced ... but has essentially banned them from breathing during phase two. Ricky Gervais insulted the famously sensitive HFPA to their faces on national television less than a year ago ... and was asked to host the Golden Globes again. Billy Crystal, who virtually nobody under the age of 25 has even heard of (he himself basically acknowledged as much), was asked to host the Oscars again. Am I forgetting others? Kitchen Nightmares (1.4/5) was down 13%. Fox (1.2/4, 3.2 million) finished fourth in 18-49 and total viewers. Analyst Sees Potential for Spin-Off of Liberty Starz
NY - Could John Malone's Liberty Media be looking at a full spin-off of premium TV network firm Liberty Starz?our editor recommendsStarz Grows Pay TV Subs, Profit in Third QuarterLiberty Media Invests $204 Million in Barnes & NobleStarz CEO Chris Albrecht engaged BTIG analyst Richard Greenfieldthinks so. In a blog posthe argued that this is a likely scenario following Wall Street chatter about a potential credit line for Starz. "While it isconceivable that Liberty Starz is raising capital to pursue an acquisition, we do not see many compelling targets," Greenfield wrote. "Furthermore, we believe Starz is far more likely to be acquired than to be a buyer of other assets management has repeatedly indicated that Starz probably makes more sense as part of a larger media conglomerate." His conclusion: "The more likely scenario is that Liberty is preparing to hard-spin Liberty Starz out of Liberty Media, to enable it to be acquired mid-late next year by a larger media entity." The analyst, for one, has in the past argued that Comcast/NBCUniversal and Time Warner would be logical buyers. Officials at Starz, led by CEO Chris Albrecht, and Liberty Media couldn't be reached or declined to comment. Liberty Starz is currently a tracking stock of Liberty Media, meaning investors can trade shares focused on the Starz business, even though it is for now part of Liberty Media. A spin would make it a separate and fully independent, asset-based stock. What caused Greenfield's blog past was news that he said surfaced out of Standard & Poor's late this week that indicated that Liberty Starz was in the process of financing a five-year $1.5 billion credit line. Management of Liberty Media and Starz declined comment. "We find it hard to believe that Liberty/Starz would not have outright denied if the story was blatantly false," Greenfield said. A spin-off of Starz would also have benefits for the company's Liberty Capital business, its collection of investments in the likes of Sirius XM and Live Nation, according to the analyst. Liberty Capital "by virtue of Liberty Starz no longer being part of the company also becomes an asset backed company, flush with cash to either aggressively shrink the equity float and/or strategic acquisitions."
